Last week, at Summer Eventia, EcoEvents and drpgroup launched the SAVE poster, the environmental and sustainability version of the HSE poster.
This year’s Summer Eventia had a strong focus on the economy and how recent activity in the UK and in Europe could affect the events industry. As an industry we need to find a new way to do business. We need to find a way of using what is within our control to engage new markets, to seize new opportunities, to improve efficiency & reduce costs and to meet the ever increasing requirements for evidenced support of our clients’ policies.
And we need to do this through being able to deliver clear measurable benefits to the bottom line…but how do companies who do not have the budget for 1-1 consultancy do this?
This is the problem that has kept our MD up at night and motivated her to approach Dale Parmenter, MD of drpgroup, to find a creative, affordable, do-able solution…aptly named SAVE.
Before you ask, it is not another badge and it is not in conflict with certification. SAVE is an interactive route map (snazzily based on the London underground) that takes you on the journey, step by step, It will be supported by tried and tested engagement tools and interactive guidance through a website that is currently being developed using recent feedback from Eventia members.
Essentially, SAVE means that any business of any size can position themselves, not just to survive but to thrive in an environmentally, socially and economically sensitive business world.
And should a company want to achieve accredited certification they can do so by following the route set out by SAVE.
We are on a mission to support the sustainability of the events industry and we believe that SAVE will do just that.
See here for a recent press article by Stand Out and let us know what you think and what you would like to see from the website applications that will bring the poster to life.

It doesn’t matter what size your company is, being more sustainable will save you money, help you gain new clients and retain existing ones. It really is as simple as that, it’s a win, win, win situation. Win for you, win for your client, win for the environment!
Market place demand for evidenced sustainability and environmental performance is only set to increase with the release of ISO20121 international standard for sustainable event management (taking over from current British Standard BS8901). So it is essential to recognise that there are clear benefits in good sustainability practices, the reduction of environmental impacts and assurance of legal compliance. Significant monetary gains could be made through innovating small changes to your practices and also through the reduced likelihood of fines and associated expense. Protect your brand and protect your clients brand!
One incredible and exemplary success story to note is drpgroup who last year saved tens of thousands of pounds, over 30 trees, 85kg of carbon and slashed their energy usage by 58% because they implemented the Sustainability Management System that we developed for them. Read the full Sustainability Case Study for the complete breakdown of savings made by drpgroup in 2011.
We have also been working with other agencies on their tenders and we have achieved great success there with the big brands such as Marks & Spencer and Coca Cola, in terms of winning new contracts when the competition has been tough.
We have had direct feedback from the agencies that we work with that the environmental and sustainability elements were key to winning the contract.
Contact us to give us the chance to help you save money and become winners like drpgroup.

Our Director, Sam Wilson, spoke to a full house as part of a panel at IOEX that was put together by the fantastic Caroline Clift of Stand Out magazine.
Panel cohorts included Dirk Mischendahl (co-founder of Logistik) and A Greener Festival’s Claire O’Neill.
Raising the debate (as always!!), there was a key focus on the importance of environmental risk management as well as how essential it is to proactively and strategically meet client policies (as well as your own!)
Hints and tips were freely given on how to identify relevant legislation and train to reduce the risk of a legal breach together with the resultant fines, prosecution and brand damaging PR.
As Sam said, ‘if you release a pollutant into the air, water, or land, it is rapidly taken away from the initial point of contamination and requires immediate, effective action to prevent mass Health & Safety implications and long-lasting ecological damage. Most risks can be designed out at the planning stage, and the rest managed through sound operational controls, robust supply chain management and the development of an environmental incident response plan.’
Does the work ‘green’ effectively communicate this essential and integral aspect of event management and production?
Have your say……

The new Government initiative ‘The Red Tape Challenge’ aims to reverse the trend of damaging over-regulation and lengthy bureaucracy by examining all of the 21,000+ regulations (including permitting) currently active in the UK today. It is doing this by opening up discussions online which the general public and businesses can respond to. Those regulations deemed pointless or out-dated will go – hurrah!
This got us thinking about Environmental Law, the gaps that exist within it and its fast-evolving nature that leaves many struggling to keep up. We joined the debate on environmental permitting as we have found this to be one of the most common sources of the negative ‘Red Tape Experience’.
For us, it’s all about understanding. We think that people need to understand why they need to follow regulations, fill out forms, obtain permits etc. The word of the law is only as good as the application of that law and how it transfers into the hands of the people that really matter (i.e. those involved in the activity as part of their job). Understanding ‘why’ is essential to alleviate the ‘Red Tape Experience’, if there is no ‘why’ there should be no law. Without knowledge of the potential impacts of not following regulations, obtaining environmental permits and filling out countless forms will always be seen as red tape. It is unlikely that the people who have to enforce such regulations will change their behaviour or thought processes without an understanding of the reason for the regulation in the first place.
